The Bolsheviks tried to switch to the Gregorian calendar since November 1917, but could not agree on the form of the transition. Discussions boiled down to two projects. According to the first of them, it was supposed to switch to a new calendar within 13 years, discarding 24 hours each year. The second project, which Lenin advocated, assumed a one-time transition, which ultimately happened.
- In order to establish in Russia the same calculation of time as almost all cultural nations, the Council of People's Commissars decides to introduce a new calendar into civil use after the month of January of this year. Because of this, the first day after January 31 of this year should be considered not February 1, but February 14, the second day should be considered the 15th, and so on,” the text of the decree said.
And already on the night of January 13-14, 1919, Soviet citizens had an additional reason to drink, because they had already celebrated the New Year in the new style, and the old style was still used by the church and was not completely forgotten.
Thus, the tradition of celebrating the Old New Year is almost 100 years old.
In Ukraine and Belarus, a Generous Evening is celebrated on this day, which includes celebrations, festivities and fortune telling. The generous evening of January 13 is very similar to Christmas Eve before Christmas. However, the dishes are no longer meatless: there should be sausages, meat, lard, pies, dumplings, and pancakes on the table.

In addition, the Old New Year is celebrated in the countries that were part of Yugoslavia. This is done especially actively in Serbia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in Montenegro, where the church uses the Julian calendar.
Finally, the Old New Year is also celebrated in North Africa. The Berbers do this. True, for them, unlike Europeans, this is a real New Year, because the Berber calendar, in fact, is a not very literate tracing from the Julian. They celebrate the holiday on January 12th.
Fortune telling for the Old New Year
The Old New Year is a special, mystical time. It is believed that the night from January 13 to 14 is the best time for fortune telling.

Of course, all this is just entertainment for people gathered in a group to fool around. But few dare to attempt one of the most reliable and mysterious fortune-telling known in Rus' - to try to see the betrothed in the mirror.
According to popular beliefs, on the night of January 13-14, all prohibitions are lifted and mysterious forces rush to Earth. Some are to harm people, others are to help.

Each girl crumples a white sheet of paper in her hands. As he sees fit - strongly or not very much. One hand or two.
Then the crumpled leaf is placed on a saucer and set on fire. In this case, the flaming “torch” needs to be brought to a white wall (we had wallpaper, so we either hung the wall with a white sheet or white paper - the second option is better and safer).

Very simple, but in my practice – effective fortune telling. Usually carried out among girls of marriageable age.
We wondered this way more than once as students. Several girls-girlfriends gather in a room (or apartment), each taking her own shoes in her hands. Since January is winter, we took boots. They crowded against the wall that led to the doors (although this is not essential, there must be a wall from which to count). They were determined in order. We simply shouted: “first boot!”, “second boot!” and so on.

When my boot crossed the threshold, I laughed so hard that I even fell on the floor. At the beginning of the year, I didn’t even have a potential groom. And the girls already had permanent boyfriends.
However, a month later I met my future husband and got married in the summer. Let it be a coincidence, but a year before this, a similar thing happened to another friend of ours: her boot was the first to step on, and in the summer she got married.
Unfortunately, I no longer had to participate in such fortune-telling: firstly, I became a married lady, and secondly, my student years were over :)
What fate awaits your baby or who will your future husband be?
Fortune telling is also a traditional one. People usually wonder about their future husband: what will he be like? Various objects are placed on the tray: a piece of bread, a glass, a coin (iron ruble), a mirror, a coal, and so on.
The tray is covered with a clean towel (preferably linen).
The girls take turns walking up to the tray, putting their hand under the towel and randomly pulling out an object.
Bread - the husband will be hard-working, a mirror - written with beauties, a coin - rich, a glass - a drunkard, coal - poor.

Using exactly the same scheme, you can guess about your child’s choice of profession. Such fortune-telling is usually carried out with children one or two years old only once.
The principle is the same. Only the item should be reached by your child. My son, for example, did not stand on ceremony - he pulled out several objects at once. In general, the boy turned out to be talented, you already understood 🙂 But most of all he was interested in the pen. Looking forward to becoming a writer :).
Fortune telling using dumplings or what year the year will be
I really like this kind of fortune telling. It's more fun than globally significant. They are preparing for the Old New Year. And some of them come with a surprise. We usually put in a coin, salt, sugar, pepper, a handful of rice, peas, and a piece of walnut. The wedding ring was never put on. But some people do this too.
If you come across a sweet dumpling, the year will be good, fruitful, joyful.

Parishioners take it home and then, for a year, use it for protection from evil spirits, healing, and removing damage. According to legends, water from all sources these days acquires special healing and cleansing properties.
