How to put upper quotes in Word. MY adept travel notes

As you know, in Word 2013, double quotes set from the keyboard in the Russian layout are automatically replaced with double quotes, which are sometimes also called Christmas tree quotes. Immediately after such auto-replacement, it is very easy to return the previous form of quotes to be set by undoing the last action with a key combination "Ctrl + Z" or the corresponding icon on the top panel, and this action will have to be done after installing each bracket.

When copying text from any sources and pasting it into a Word document, double quotes are not replaced, and it may happen that quotes of various types may be present in the text. If it doesn’t matter which quotes to set in Word, but you still need the same everywhere, then the easiest way is to search for and replace paired quotes with double ones. And if you need to set only paired quotes, you will have to spend a lot of time replacing double quotes, since the opening and closing double quotes are the same.

Auto-replacement of double quotes with double quotes can be disabled in the settings. For this, we pass "File\Options\Spelling\AutoCorrect Options\AutoFormat As You Type", where you should uncheck the box next to the item ""straight" quotes "paired"".

In addition, there are other quotes in Word, which can be set through the menu "Symbol" tab "Insert". To do this, the menu "Symbol" select item "Other Symbols" and look for suitable quotes in the list of characters.

If you are just starting to get acquainted with the capabilities of a computer keyboard, then you may need tips how to put quotes on keyboard. For this, there are several various methods. Let's look at the most common ones.

First of all, let's look at the existing types of quotes. Symbolically, they are divided into two types: German (the familiar "paws") and French (in other words, "herringbone"). Quotation marks of the first type are commas that are located along the top edge of the text. Most often, such quotes are used for writing text by hand. And the quotation marks "herringbone" are combined in pairs: a less than sign to open the text, a greater than sign to close it. "Christmas trees" are used to design texts in professional publications, namely, prospectuses, magazines, booklets with advertising.

Quote methods

There are the following methods for entering quotation marks on a computer keyboard:

  • by pressing a special key combination;
  • in the word processor "Word" through a special window with symbols;
  • using a table with symbols;
  • using ASK codes.

Any approach has its pros and cons. Thanks to these ratios, it is possible to give correct advice on their use.

How to put quotes "herringbones" on the keyboard

Since quotation marks are rarely used in text, there is no specific key for them. To enter them, you need to press several keys at once. In addition, the combination depends on which language is currently activated. If you need to use herringbone quotes, then the procedure is as follows:

This method of introducing quotes is the easiest and most commonly used. You can enter quotation marks this way in any application. However, it has a major drawback. So only "German" quotes are entered, and "French" quotes will not work. If this type of sign suits you, then you can use this method.

Quotation marks in word processor "Word"

Another way to introduce quotation marks is in the character window in the word processor "Word". Here, when typing, you can use the method described above. One difference: if the Russian language is activated, “Christmas trees” will appear, and with English, “paws”. However, you can use another method of introduction. To do this, you need to take these steps:

  1. Use the navigation keys to find the desired type of symbol and select them with a marker.
  2. Press the "Tab" key until the highlighted character moves to the "Run" button and press "Enter".
  3. By pressing the "Tab" key, go to the "Close" button and press "Enter" again.

This method of entering quotes is the most difficult. In addition, such an introduction requires special program- Word processor. However, it does allow the user to select symbol views.

Applying the symbol table

There is another method for introducing quotes - use the character table. To do this, perform the following actions:

The keyboard shortcuts listed above are only available on the English version of the keyboard. Otherwise, nothing will come of it.

We enter quotes through ASK codes

You can also enter quotation marks using ASK codes. In this case, quotes are placed using special digital combinations. To do this, we perform the following actions:

This approach is quite simple. In addition, you can choose the type of quotes. The only disadvantage of this method is that you need to remember the character codes. And this is sometimes burdensome.

In Russian, quotation marks occupy a special place - a special paired punctuation mark. It is usually used to denote quotes, separate words, if their non-standard or ironic meaning is implied, titles. legal entities, firms, etc. Sometimes without them it would be difficult to understand the meaning of a sentence. There are 6 different types quotes:
- English (used in keyboard layouts) - "..."
— English singles — ‘…’
- French (or the so-called "Christmas trees") - "..."
- Swedish (or reverse) - "…"
- German (or "paws") - "..."
– Polish – „…”
As practice shows, many people like to put French quotation marks in documents. Only not everyone knows how to do it in Word or Excel. But everything is very easy and simple.

There are a few different ways, which allow you to put quotation marks in an Excel or Word document.

The easiest way to make quotes

The easiest way to do it in a Christmas tree document is to use the keyboard shortcut. In Word, it works without problems, but in other programs - every other time. It is done like this. We switch the layout to Russian. Then, holding down the "Shift" key, you must press "2".

We press the combination for the first time - the quotes open: “. Press a second time - closed: ".

Inserting quotes through the character table

The second way is to use the character table built into the Microsoft Office package. To use it, you need to start Word or Excel and open the "Insert" tab:

It will have a "Symbols" section, and it will have an icon in the form of the Greek symbol "Omega". Click on it and the following window will open:

Here you need to find quotes-herringbones and put them in the right place in the document.

Inserting Christmas trees through codes

The third way is the most ingenious. Its meaning is to use codes of special characters. Each of the characters in the table has a special code that allows you to insert it in the right place just by typing a certain sequence of numbers while holding down the Alt key. To open quotes, type:

Alt+0171

To close:

Alt+0187

Another trick is to type numbers on the number pad on the right side of the keyboard (In order for it to function, the “NumLock” button must be pressed).

P.S.: There is another option, but this is more for interest than the normal way to put quotation marks in Word. it consists in this. Switch to the English layout and type letters ab then press the key combination Alt+X and ... we get: ". Now we enter bb, press the key combination Alt+X and we get: In general - sleight of hand and no fraud =)

Often there are situations when you need to put one or another sign when writing a text, but it is not clear how to do this. So it happens with such a character as square brackets. Not all users can figure out how to write them correctly.

However, this is not at all difficult, in fact, there are even several ways to write square brackets.

The first way, the easiest and fastest way, is to put a square bracket using the keyboard.

Instructions in two steps:

  1. Switch the keyboard layout to English;
  2. In the right corner, find the buttons responsible for writing Russian letters - X and Ъ. In the English layout, these buttons print brackets. If you press the Shift button, which is responsible for the upper characters, then a curly bracket - () will be printed. However, if you do not press Shift, the lower characters will be printed. And that's just the square brackets - .

As you can see, everything is quite simple. But what if your keyboard doesn't have these brackets? For example, you have a keyboard in other languages and is different from the one I just wrote about. This is quite acceptable, right?

I can't know the layout of keyboards in all the languages of the planet, so I'll tell you about the following ways to write square brackets.

Symbols

Any text editor, whether it's a text editor or a WordPress editor, has a character table. Symbols are located, as a rule, on the top panel. Click on the symbol icon and a window will open.

Choose the characters you want, in our case, square brackets, and insert them into the text.

You can also remember the numeric values of the square brackets. At any time when you need to enter square brackets, you press the alt button, then, without releasing it, press the plus sign and the numbers 91 on the right number pad. When you release the alt button, an opening bracket will appear.

If instead of 91 you enter the numbers - 93, then a closing bracket will appear. Thus, you can learn and enter many of the characters you need. A table of character codes is available on the Internet.

copying

Another simple and reliable way is to copy the square brackets into notepad and add them as needed to the text.

This is done as follows:

  1. Open the search page in any browser;
  2. Write in the search box - square brackets;
  3. Copy the characters in the search results to your notepad.

Now, when you need to insert a square bracket into the text, just open notepad and copy the opening or closing bracket.

When typing text, it often becomes necessary to put quotation marks. In this case, depending on the situation, it may be necessary to use herringbone quotes, single or double quotes. Now we will talk about how to make all these types of quotes in the Word text editor. The article will be useful for all versions of Word, including Word 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019.

If you need to put quotation marks in the Word text editor, then the easiest way is to use the keyboard. To insert quotes for Christmas trees, switch to the Russian keyboard layout and use the SHIFT-2 key combination. By default, this key combination inserts opening Christmas tree quotes. But, if you use it at the end of a word, you will get a closing quote. If the doggy sign (@) appears instead of quotation marks, then this means that you are working in the English layout, switch to the Russian layout and try again.

By the way, if you need straight quotes, then after inserting Christmas tree quotes, just press the Ctrl-Z key combination, and they will turn into regular straight quotes.

How to put English quotation marks

In the English keyboard layout, quotation marks look a little different and are inserted using a different key combination. In order to insert such quotes, switch to the English keyboard layout and use the key combination Shift-E. As a result, quotes should appear. By default, an opening quote is inserted, but if you use this key combination at the end of a word, the quote will turn out to be a closing one. If you get the letter "E", then this means that you are working in the Russian layout and you need to switch to English.

As in the previous case, after inserting these quotes, you can press the key combination Ctrl-Z and get straight quotes.

Other Ways to Insert Quotes in Word

Also, quotes can be inserted into the Word using the "Symbol" function. To do this, go to the "Insert" tab, click on the "Symbol" button and select the "Other Symbols" option.

As a result, the "Symbol" window will appear in front of you. In it, you need to select the font "Plain Text", the set "Punctuation Marks" and select the quotation marks that you want to insert into the Word document with the mouse. Then you just need to click on the "Insert" button and the selected character will appear in the place where the cursor was.

Once you have inserted a symbol in this way, it will appear in the list of last used symbols and can be inserted much faster.

In addition, you can use keyboard shortcuts with the ALT button and numbers on the additional numeric keypad (under Num Lock). To do this, hold down the ALT button and without releasing it, type the numeric code on the numeric keypad. For example:

  • Combinations ALT-0145 and ALT-0146 - insert single quotes;
  • Combinations ALT-0147 and ALT0148 - insert regular double quotes;
  • Combinations ALT-0171 and ALT-0187 - insert Christmas tree quotes;
