When buying a substrate, you must consider the color of the decorative wallpaper. Under light colors, it is better to choose a white insulation - the optimal basis for wallpaper of any color.

Before choosing wallpaper from expanded polystyrene, it is necessary to evaluate the required degree of thermal insulation. Thermal wallpaper with a thickness of 3-5 mm is sufficient for finishing adjacent walls. Thicker material will provide better noise reduction and better insulation.

The technology of wall decoration with heat-insulating wallpaper

The order of installation of thermal wallpaper implies mandatory preparation, priming of the walls, the choice of a suitable adhesive composition and adherence to the method of gluing the insulation.

Necessary materials and inventory

To perform finishing work you will need:

  • insulating underlay;
  • glue - a composition designed to work with heavy wallpaper is suitable; when calculating the quantity, it must be taken into account that the glue will be applied twice - on the surface to be glued and on the wallpaper;
  • putty for leveling the wall - the composition is selected in accordance with the type of base;
  • deep penetration soil that prevents the appearance of mold;
  • spatulas of different sizes;
  • tape for finishing the joints of thermal wallpaper sheets;
  • pressure roller with a low pile;
  • construction knife;
  • measuring instruments (tape measure, level);
  • soft cloth;
  • glue roller.

If you need to remove old wallpaper, you can use a sharp knife or scraper.

Surface preparation

Preparatory activities can be divided into several component stages.

Stage 1. Removing the old finish:

  1. Moisten the surface and leave for 15-30 minutes.
  2. Pry off the soaked wallpaper with a sharp tool and remove it from the wall.
  3. If the measures taken were not effective, it is necessary to use a special wash.

Stage 2. Elimination of defects. Apply putty to the surface with a wide spatula, smooth with a trowel. After the layer has dried, the wall must be sanded and dust-free. Apply the primer evenly in one or two coats (depending on the porosity and friability of the substrate).

Follow-up actions should be started after two or three days, provided that the primer is completely dry. Optimal conditions for further work:

  • temperature - from +10°С;
  • humidity - within 70 °.

Bonding of the thermal underlay

Before proceeding with the installation of thermal wallpaper, they must be prepared:

  1. Measure the height of the room.
  2. Spread the insulation on the floor and mark the cut points. At the same time, it is necessary to leave a margin of 2 cm for the final trimming after gluing the wallpaper to the wall - under the ceiling and floor plinth. For the arrangement of acoustic and thermal insulation, the “wall-to-floor” laying method is used - the strips of the substrate are placed on the wall with an overlap of 15 cm. Subsequently, the finishing floor covering is mounted. This method reduces the likelihood of cold spots.
  3. After cutting, leave the insulation sheets to lie down and straighten up under their own weight.

Pasting technology:

  1. Mix the adhesive solution, observing the proportions recommended by the manufacturer.
  2. Apply glue to the inner surface of the strip, leave for 5-15 minutes for impregnation (the exact period is indicated on the package of thermal insulation wallpaper).
  3. Treat the wall, capturing an area wider than the size of the panel.
  4. Attach the insulation to the wall, smooth it out with a soft roller or plastic spatula in the direction from top to bottom. Remove excess glue with a soft sponge.
  5. Check the verticality of the first strip with a level - the rest of the elements will be placed along it.
  6. The second canvas is joined closely with the first cut, avoiding the appearance of bumps.
  7. The polystyrene foam substrate cannot be bent at the corners - the wallpaper is joined end-to-end. The gaps that appear must be filled with sealant.
  8. Joint lines should be covered with adhesive tape or masking tape.

Finishing decorative finish

When choosing wallpaper to cover the insulated substrate, preference should be given to extremely dense options. Thin paper products will not work, as over time the joints may disperse.

Procedure:

  1. Cut out the wallpaper with a margin for cutting.
  2. According to the level or plumb line, “beat off” the vertical line - for an even location of the first strip.
  3. Apply glue to the wallpaper and the wall.
  4. Apply the first canvas to the surface, leveling it over the entire area and “expelling” the air.
  5. Cut off excess wallpaper, aligning the top and bottom of the junction line with the wall and floor.

Thermo tab. Insulated wallpaper company "Izopan" (Ukraine) are produced with a thickness of 3 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm. The basis of the material is polystyrene. The material is neutral - does not undergo decomposition by microorganisms and does not emit harmful substances.

Thermo-Tab insulation is suitable for use in commercial and residential premises. Estimated cost - about $ 9 / roll 6 mm thick.

Eco tap. The heat-insulating substrate for wallpaper is available in 3 or 6 mm thickness. The basis of the material is expanded polystyrene. Eco-Tap basic features on 6mm:

  • average thermal conductivity class - 0.06-0.115 W / m * s (1 mm of the substrate corresponds to 20 mm of brick, 10 mm of foam concrete or 40 mm of reinforced concrete wall);

Of course, the interior wall cladding with the use of heat-insulating wallpaper will give the desired effect and increase the energy efficiency of the house. However, to achieve a more tangible result, it is necessary to act comprehensively and additionally insulate the building from the outside.
