EVIL INFLUENCE

Among the groups that appeared on the Leningrad stage in the last two or three years, representatives of the so-called. post-punk in all its manifestations: from hardcore to neo-romanticism and gothic. The most curious samples of the domestic version of "gothic" rock are the songs of the group EVIL INFLUENCE, organized in November 1987 by former members of the lesser-known compositions MECHANICAL BALLET and FEAR MONUMENT.
Alexander Skvortsov (vocals), Vadim Kudryavtsev (guitar), Dmitry Petrov (bass) and Igor Mosin (drums) first showed their abilities in April 1988, performing at stage I of the sixth Lenrock Festival, and immediately received a ticket to stage II. Although the EVIL INFLUENCE opened the festival, which - in the conditions of inevitable tuning turmoil - somewhat reduced the effect of their audiovisual impact on the audience, they were noticed and appreciated. For next months EVIL INFLUENCE toured extensively and received a number of prizes at regional rock festivals.
In the autumn of 1988, V. Kudryavtsev left EVIL INFLUENCE, who, after a series of successive experiments, was replaced by Oleg Dzyatko. In the summer of 1990, vocalist A. Skvortsov also left the group, who is now preparing his solo debut.

Interview with the Evil Influence group

Why do I need Ian Curtis?

IN Russia (or rather, in Soviet Union) post-punk showed up almost a decade late. This suspicious individual suddenly appeared in St. Petersburg in 1987 under the name bad influence, began to walk in strange outfits through the streets of the city, sing about death, behave defiantly, mention some dubious overseas brothers Bauhaus and Joy Division.

"I remember how the police took me to the Griboyedov Canal for walking in black clothes." - Says Igor Mosin, drummer and one of the founders of the group. The team did not last long - in 1991 the country freed itself from the Evil Influence and sighed calmly, not suspecting that an even more active lady in black would soon appear.

R.I.P. Igor, did you have a desire to revive the group?
Igor: It seems to me that all these associations of teams do not lead to anything good after a long time. Everything has its time. When we rehearsed for 30 hours a week, naturally, we understood each other from half a word. And after some time, while people do not communicate, an abyss appears between them. The group was based on human relationships, now they are over. But we recently re-released the 89th album "Stillness" on 2Srecords, which is available for purchase online.

R.I.P. How did it happen that you listened to Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees in a country where foreign music hardly penetrated?
Igor: Firstly, people came from abroad, brought records, magazines. Secondly, we were one of the first bands that went abroad in 1990. They toured all over Germany, performed together with German teams in punk clubs.

R.I.P. Can we say that you imitated your idols?
Igor: If you like Joy Division, you live this music, of course, you start doing something similar. We did not specifically copy.

R.I.P. What attracted you to post-punk?
Igor: The atmosphere was very sincere. Time for beautiful romance. Our vocalist Alexander Skvortsov wrote amazing lyrics. He put himself into such a state ... No, not into a drug. He deliberately could not sleep for several days, and then called and asked: "How do you like this line?" There were many texts about death, because this topic is close, intimate, there can be no deception here. It's hard to lie when your friend is in the coffin. Only when faced with this, you understand the true values.

R.I.P. What kind of relationship do you think you could develop with Peter Murphy?
Igor: In my opinion, he is a fairly easy-to-reach person. This question should be asked to our vocalist. He had some contact with Murphy. I also know for sure that Sasha met with Nina Hagen.

R.I.P. As far as I know, Joy Division is closer to you. Then the same question about Ian Curtis.
Igro: He had a very fast life. He's only been singing for two years. I think it would be difficult to build a relationship with Jan. I would have to either go into the same state of constant frenzy with him, or pull him out of there.

R.I.P. What would you do?
Igor: First of all, I would try to understand him. On the other hand, why do I need Ian Curtis? I had a chance to meet fantastic people in Russia as well. Today I was at the funeral of Alex Rabid of the People's Militia. ("A good moment was chosen for the interview." - Reproached himself R.I.P. and remembered the phrase about values spoken by Igor shortly before). Alex's whole life was a complete frenzy. Ian Curtis lasted only two years, and he - thirty years. For me, this is a legendary person.

R.I.P. In '89 you performed with Sonic Youth. What are your memories of that concert?
Igor: Just when I found out that we were playing with them, I opened some kind of magazine and I see: Sonic Youth number one on the US charts! Wow, I think such a significant group! But the situation was very comical: fifteen advanced journalists knew about them. Many local bands were invited to the festival in Moscow: Brigade C, Nogu Svelo. They performed in vests, there was such a farce, and immediately before American musicians we went out. Everyone is so dark. In general, arrival Sonic Youth to Moscow turned out to be very sad. There was some scuffle in the hall. The group left almost in tears. In St. Petersburg, everything went peacefully and sincerely.

R.I.P. Three associations with the word "post-punk".
Igor: Hair like Robert Smith, fog, of course, and a bridge.

R.I.P. Is post-punk a lifestyle?
Igor: Unlike punk, for me it is a way of feeling, understanding life. Here we are sitting, talking - this is punk, and if I come home and start talking about it, having passed everything through myself, then this is already post-punk.

So, the interview is nothing more than post-punk in person. Still, a suspicious gentleman still lives in the country. Only under other names.

R.I.P. is one of the first Russian gothic publications. The subtitle of the publication is a journal of gloomy aesthetics. At dusk, everyday consciousness calms down. It's time for creativity. It is about the works created at such an hour that the publication tells on its pages. Publications cover all areas of modern dark culture (music, cinema, literature, painting, photography, theater, fashion, style, etc.). The magazine chose a rather critical approach to evaluating works of "gloomy" art, counting on a thoughtful and doubting audience. And most importantly: here we are talking about music, cinema, painting, literature, photography, creation as such ... does not leave us indifferent. Rest in peace. Mostly at peace with myself. And with those around you.

It was born by the joint efforts of the musicians of the groups Mechanical Ballet and the Monument of Fear. It happened in November 1987. EVIL INFLUENCE

At the end of the 80s, when the first wave of the rock boom, inspired by the heyday of magneto publishing, had not subsided yet and its heroes were constantly touring the country, freeing up space for the next generation of musicians, the concept of “independence” became the main term for the artistic paradigm of this generation. If in the West the label “indie” determined, first of all, the status of an artist published not by a transnational concern, but by a small recording company, then in Russia this term has become synonymous with new musical thinking, born of the ideology of the new wave.

One of the first stars of the independent scene in St. Petersburg, in particular, the pioneers of the neo-Gothic and the forerunners of the brutal alternative, were the members of the group with the appropriate name EVIL INFLUENCE. It was assembled in March 1987 by drummer Igor Mosin (b. 03/28/64 in Leningrad) and bass guitarist Dmitry "Dick" Petrov (b. 06/22/62 in Staraya Russa, Novgorod region). Petrov graduated from the Faculty of Geology of Leningrad State University and from 1979 to 1987 played in a group that changed several names, the last of which was LUNA. Mosin studied at the Institute. Bonch-Bruevich and was a member of the YOU group (or YOU); she voiced the play "The Career of Arturo Ui" at the local student theater, the actors of which were Maxim Berezhnoy (later KAMIKAZE), Igor Korenkov and Alexander Senin (later COFFEE, PETLYA NESTEROV). Once this performance was even shown at the "People's Theater" on Rubinstein, 13, where the Rock Club was based.

In the winter of 1984-1985, Mosin and YOU guitarist Sergei Shevchenkov attended a day hospital at the Institute. Bekhterev, where Andrei Otryaskin (JUNGLE), Roman Kaporin (MYTHS, later CHILDREN) and Petrov were examined (or rather, mowed down from the army). In the mid-80s, Mosin briefly played with guitarist and singer Terry and bass player Gosha Solovyov, but their exercises did not end in anything meaningful, and Terry and Gosha soon started BADEN-BADEN.

In February 1987, Petrov and Mosin met again and, having found out that their tastes and views on music are quite similar (both liked JOY DIVISION, THE CURE, NEW ORDER, Nick Cave, etc.), they decided to form their own group. The third in their company was the guitarist Vadim "Diamant" Kudryavtsev, who worked in the club at the dormitory of the Textile Institute on Sadovaya, where a good apparatus was assembled with his efforts, which made it possible to immediately solve the problem of rehearsals.

The group received the name MECHANICAL BALLET (from the painting by Fernand Leger) and gathered for their first rehearsal on Igor's birthday, March 28, 1987. They played music five days a week, trying to transform everything they knew and could do into concrete music, played a lot of instrumental, tried to compose songs (Mosin sang one of them, based on Petrov's poetry), and looked for a singer who shared their views.

Bonch's graduate, young engineer Alexander Skvortsov, who was brought by their friend sound engineer, who sometimes worked in the same club, captivated the trio with his reckless love for the work of ex-BAUHAUS vocalist Peter Murphy, a similar timbre in voice and decadent lyrics, which, probably, would not be ashamed to sing and Murphy himself. Prior to this, Sasha drummed for a couple of months without much success in the MONUMENT OF FEAR. When the line-up finally took shape, a new name was required, and Mosin, by a vague association with the work of Morrissey, suggested giving the group the name EVIL INFLUENCE.

Their first major performance took place at the Second Wave festival in the DK im. 10th anniversary of October (July 1987); in January 1988, they auditioned (together with the BRIGADNY RID, NEP and NESTEROV'S LOOP) and were enrolled in the Rock Club, in June they opened the program of its VI festival at the Winter Stadium, after which they gave several more concerts. By this time, EVIL INFLUENCE had a director, artist Viktor Snesar (he defined his creative style as "depressionism").

Meanwhile, Igor Mosin in the Progress Palace of Culture was engaged in cinema together with the famous master of parallel cinema Andrei Venclova. Together they filmed a 16mm video for the first song of Ill Influence “24 Hours” (dedicated to the memory of JOY DIVISION leader Ian Curtis), and later made a video magazine “Talktrack Video”, which provided information about genre-related bands of those years . In March 1988, the first article about the work of EVIL INFLUENCE appeared on the pages of the RIO magazine.

Ten months after the debut, in October 1988, Vadim Kudryavtsev left the group to take care of his sick wife. He returned to music only in 1991, having collected one of the first techno projects in St. Petersburg LUKI (with an emphasis on the last syllable), from where, by the way, two PEP-SEE vocalists came out. Wandering guitarist Igor "Long" Borisov (formerly in CIVILIZATION Z, NATE! and KINO) was invited to take his place. He managed to play on the recording of the song “Now” at the Radio House, but soon after that he left and showed up at the ZAMKE ZO.

EVIL INFLUENCE: D. Petrov, A. Skvortsov

From December 1988 to August 1989 Eduard "Ed" Nesterenko of the congenial LOOP NESTEROV was the guitarist for EVIL INFLUENCE. Edik appeared in the video for the song "Now" and the first version of the debut album of the group "Immobility" - it was recorded at the Bones of Gloom studio in Peterhof and, despite some technical flaws, most adequately reflected the sound of EVIL INFLUENCE.

Responsibilities in the group were distributed as follows: Skvortsov composed the lyrics, while Petrov and Mosin did most of the music, arrangements and general editing. In April 1989, they were honored to open for SONIC YOUTH during their Moscow tour of the USSR, and in June they played at the next Rock Club festival.

The music of EVIL INFLUENCE attracted the attention of Sergey Kuryokhin, who often looked at them at the point, looking for musicians for POP-MECHANICS. However, they never played together. Snesar left, and Alexander Chervyakov became the new director of the group. They regularly performed in St. Petersburg and went on tour around the country (often together with NESTEROV'S LOOP).

The long-awaited stability came only at the beginning of September 1989, when an acquaintance of Skvortsov, guitarist and singer Oleg "Malysh" Dzyatko (b. relatively low Mosin and Petrov.

In January 1990, as part of the Leningrad-Hamburg rock bridge, EVIL INFLUENCE gave a series of concerts in both cities together with the St. Petersburg bands YUGO-ZAPAD and VOSTOK-1, as well as the German MIXED DOUBLE, LUNATIC FRUIGE and STOP EATING. In March, they recorded the second version of Immobility in their Sadovaya (this time the sound was made by Sasha Boroditsky from the studio of Edita Pieha).

Nevertheless, this line-up did not last too long: in June 1990, Sasha Skvortsov, dissatisfied with the direction of the group's evolution, left. For a long time he threatened to show the public his new project, from time to time flashed behind the bar at the Fish Fabrique club (which he co-founded with his friend Oleg Labkovsky), regularly traveled around Europe, and then married an Englishwoman and became a subject of Her Majesty.

THE EVIL INFLUENCE remained the three of us. Dzyatko began to sing. They continued to give concerts, in March 1991 they took part in the festival in honor of the decade of the Rock Club, occasionally toured (including at the Full Goodbye festival in Kiev in the summer of 1991, in Odessa, Kremenchug, etc. .) and starred for the musical television program "Ferris Wheel", with the filing of the director Natalya Greshishcheva, they recorded their second album "Give Me New God" (1991) at the studio in Ostankino.

By this time, the band's music had changed significantly: from gothic in the manner of BAUHAUS and minimalism, EVIL INFLUENCE moved to hardcore and related musical forms, however, their performances occurred from time to time: the Kid was increasingly on board, and not on stage, and the group was forced to idle for a long time. With the opening of the TaMtAm club in the summer of 1991, VLIYANIE became one of its regulars, in December, at the suggestion of Seva Gakkel, it warmed up the famous Hungarian group SEXEPEL at the Youth Palace, but the next year it actually ceased to exist.

Mosin, who began working on the radio in mid-1991, left music for a while, although he regularly invited musicians he knew to his programs, including the same Kuryokhin. Petrov distinguished himself in STYLE and CAT'S HOUSE, and then played a year with SPITFIRE. In the spring of 1994, both resumed cooperation under the banner of BONDZINSKY, and in 1997-1999 they also played together in the BRIGADE CONTRACT.

Later, Mosin finally left the world of radio (together with his brother Maxim, better known on the club scene as DJ Kislovsky), and in early 2004 Petrov joined the young hardcore band GRANDSHATTLBANDA. Vadik Kudryavtsev spent seven years in Holland, after which he returned to St. Petersburg and took up law. Skvortsov lives in Leeds and, according to him, writes new music, which, however, has not yet been heard by anyone except him. Dzyatko goes to sea, and Ed Nesterenko in the 90s played in parallel-sequentially with his LOOP in NEVER BELIEVE HIPPIES, HAPPY BIRTHDAY and HEALTH.

In the fall of 2002, Mosin and Petrov planned to put together a BAD INFLUENCE for a performance at a gothic rock festival, but it never materialized. Both of the group's albums have been archived, but have never been officially released. The song "Coma" was included on the vinyl compilation Once Upon a Time at the Rock Club (1991).
