Cover the bed with foam rubber and fabric. Making the interior more expensive: do-it-yourself soft headboard

One of the main rooms in every home is the bedroom. It is intended not only for relaxation, but also for recuperation. Therefore, it is very important that everything is as convenient, beautiful and thought out to the smallest detail as possible. As for additional decor, it doesn’t have to be a lot. Therefore, we suggest making a stylish headboard for the bed, which will become a kind of accent in the room.

Headboard for a bed made of cardboard: master class

For those looking for the simplest option for creating a headboard, we recommend paying attention to cardboard as a base material. Despite the fact that it is thin, this design looks very beautiful and laconic.

Necessary materials:

  • sheets of cardboard – 2 pcs.;
  • Double-sided tape;
  • interlining;
  • spray glue;
  • PVA glue;
  • fabric with a pattern;
  • plain fabric;
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • stationery knife;
  • round container.

On the first sheet of cardboard we draw the outlines of a smaller headboard. In this case there are rounded parts. To make them symmetrical and even, we recommend simply tracing a round container.

We cut out the workpiece using scissors or a stationery knife. Place it on a second sheet of cardboard. We retreat a few centimeters on each side and draw the outline of the part. Carefully cut out another blank.

The result should be two blanks, as shown in the photo.

Place non-woven fabric on the work surface and larger cardboard on top. We add a few centimeters on each side as allowances, and cut off the rest. We connect the parts together with spray glue.

Using the same principle, we cut off a plain fabric and glue it on top of the non-woven fabric.

We cut the fabric with lining at the corners, as shown in the photo. It is very important to cut so as not to reach the edge of the cardboard.

Carefully fold the interlining with the fabric and secure them to the cardboard with double-sided tape. We repeat the same with the second workpiece. But for it we use fabric with a pattern.

Glue the pieces together and leave them for several hours.

We attach double-sided tape to the inside of the headboard and fix the structure on the wall.

A stylish, but at the same time budget headboard for your bed is ready! If desired, you can arrange decorative pillows with a similar print so that everything looks as harmonious as possible.

DIY soft headboard for a bed

Those who love a laconic interior should not make a too complex, bulky headboard for their bed. A plain soft design will be much more relevant.

We will prepare the following materials:

  • plywood sheet;
  • furniture stapler;
  • batting;
  • nails or furniture buttons;
  • thick fabric;
  • spray glue;
  • scissors;
  • roulette;
  • pencil;
  • ruler;
  • hammer;
  • a thread;
  • wall mounts.

From a sheet of plywood we cut out a rectangle of suitable size.

We place several layers of batting on top of it, taking into account allowances on each side.

Apply glue to a sheet of plywood and fix the first layer of batting. We repeat the same with the rest.

WITH reverse side We fix the blanks with batting using a furniture stapler.

Turn the workpiece over. Cut the fabric to the required size. On one side, spray glue onto the batting and immediately apply the fabric to it. Smooth it as much as possible so that the surface is even. We repeat the same until we have glued all the fabric.

We leave the workpiece to dry for several hours. Then we fix the fabric at the corners of the headboard to the plywood with a furniture stapler.

You can finish at this stage. But we suggest adding a laconic decor to the headboard. To do this, we make a mark at each corner, as shown in the photo.

We drive the nail in according to the mark and tie a thread around it. We stretch it and tie it around the second one. We do the same on every corner.

We make marks along the line where we will need to hammer in nails or furniture buttons for decoration.

We hammer nails or buttons around the entire perimeter.

We fix the stylish headboard to the wall using special fasteners.

Headboard with tile look

Of course, there are many simple options for how to make a headboard. But if you have time, be sure to try to implement the idea from this master class. After all, such a headboard looks amazingly beautiful.

In the process we will need the following:

  • plywood blanks of the same size;
  • glue;
  • textile;
  • plywood sheet;
  • scissors;
  • padding polyester;
  • furniture stapler.

Based on the size of the plywood blanks, we cut the fabric into equal squares, taking into account allowances for each side.

Place a piece of fabric on the work surface and place a sheet of plywood on top.

We connect the parts together with a furniture stapler, but only on one side.

We bend the corner, stretch the fabric and fix it with a stapler.

We fill the blank with padding polyester so that a slide is formed.

We turn the workpiece over and fix the remaining sides of the fabric with a stapler.

We repeat the same for each square of plywood.

On the work surface we place a sheet of plywood, which will serve as the base of the headboard. We glue all the blanks to it one by one as close to each other as possible.

We install the structure and attach it to the bed.

Bed with headboard in the interior

Of course, a bed with a headboard looks much more attractive. In addition, due to this, it becomes even more convenient and practical in everyday life.

By the way, the headboard does not have to be made of classic materials. The painted options or with an accent of wallpaper look quite original.

More daring and active people often choose a headboard from unusual materials.

As you can see, even the simplest interior looks completely different if you use original items. In the selection of photographs, one cannot help but notice that very often unusual materials or wallpaper are used as a headboard, which looks interesting and new in its own way. Therefore, choose the option that is most suitable for you and feel free to bring your ideas to life.

I recently finished renovating my bedroom. I also wanted to update the bed, as it appearance morally obsolete. I decided to make a quilted soft back. The result is in the photo.

The MK of the process with pictures can be easily found on the Internet, but the “pitfalls” that I had to encounter are not described there.

So that you don’t have to “open the bike” again, I’m writing this post.

Let's start with the materials.

I needed:

Sheet of plywood. I’ll tell you right away that you won’t be able to find plywood in a hardware store. Simply because construction plywood is of low quality and it bends during use. So we are looking for it in furniture manufacturing companies. We need high-quality FURNITURE plywood!

Since my backrest size was planned to be 175 by 80 cm, I had to take a standard sheet of plywood, which is much larger. But they can cut it for you right where you buy it (not for free, of course).

Next " headache" - this is the choice of fabric. I took artificial leather. It worked fine. During use, I’m constantly afraid of scratching it with my fingernail. If you don’t want such problems, buy furniture fabric. It’s better to use chinille or slightly fleecy fabric. It’s easier to work with. We buy the fabric in the store for furniture makers, you can also buy foam rubber there. I took the thickest one, but this is optional.

When purchasing fabric, keep in mind that its width is 150 cm, which means it may not fit along the grain. Therefore, you need to take it without a pronounced vertical pattern. Foam rubber is sold in standard sheets, so you will have to cut it out yourself. It can be cut (or rather not even cut, but sawed) well with a wallpaper knife. Even if the edge is not perfect, it’s okay, it will still be pressed with the fabric.

The next important detail is the buttons. I went to the studio, where they covered 32 buttons with my leatherette.

DO NOT REPEAT!

Any buttons with tight fitting have a plastic foot. It can't withstand the load and just bounces off! So I had to change all the buttons.

As it turns out, there are no metal buttons on the stem in sewing stores! (It was amazing).

Therefore, we immediately go to a store for the military, where they sell shoulder straps, vests and BUTTONS! (By the way, the seller, having learned how many buttons I needed, immediately asked “for furniture”? So I’m not alone with my need in our city).

I think that you can cover metal buttons quite decently at home. It was easier for me in this regard. I took the caps from my unsuccessful custom-made buttons (And they are tightened using a mechanism and turn out to be perfectly even around the circumference), glued them to the military ones and tightened the tails with thread. A custom button cost 6 rubles, a metal one cost 5 rubles.

I also took 32 plastic buttons with puncture holes. They are needed to secure the thread on the wrong side of our back. (Remember fur coats, this is how the buttons are held on them).

Batting. Maybe he’s superfluous, I don’t know, but I liked working with him. I covered the back with it before I took on the leatherette, so my foam didn’t move or move anywhere, which made life much easier and improved the quality of work. One note - you don’t need to pull it too hard - it will fall apart! Next time, I think I'll use a knitted backing fabric rather than batting.

You still need a drill, but better man with a drill in his hands. We mark the holes directly on the plywood. Either in a checkerboard pattern or in vertical rows, like mine. To make quilting easier, I advise you to make large holes (but no larger than plastic buttons).

Threads. You can buy them at a fabric store or hardware store. The main condition is that they should not tear. AT ALL! They can only be cut. I took nylon threads.

Needle. It should be longer than the thickness of your back (plywood + foam rubber + batting + fabric). And it would be better if it was much longer!

The needles break during the process, take a few.

Furniture stapler. Sold in hardware stores. There are plastic and metal ones. I bought a metal one and immediately got staples for it. Take a simple one, without adaptation for different sizes of staples, this is an unnecessary function. I paid 250 rubles for my stapler.

So we are ready!

We take plywood with drilled holes, put foam rubber, and batting on top. Let's shoot.

We put leatherette on top. Let's shoot.

We mark on the fabric (leatherette) the places where the buttons will be. Let's start quilting.

Since, out of inexperience, I drilled small holes, I was able to pierce the needle and thread from the inside out onto the face, but the reverse process was not possible. I had to look for a way out.

So what I did:

1. We bring the needle from the inside to the face, double thread, long. We leave the long tail on the wrong side.

2. Cut the thread from the needle.

3. Insert a covered button into the eye and tie tightly with three knots. Cut the thread.

4. Pull the thread by the tails that remain from the wrong side. This is where we need a man (well, the one who came with the drill). He presses with all his might on the covered button, and meanwhile you tightly tie a plastic one from the inside, which is for the puncture.

5. Cut off the excess threads and release.

BEAUTY! And so all 32 buttons.

The last question remains to be solved - how to attach this headboard to the bed. I decided the issue radically - NO WAY!

I went to a framing shop and bought two picture hinges. The biggest.

I drilled them to the back (well, you can’t let go of a man with a drill until the end of the process), screws onto the wall and hung the back on the wall.

I sawed off the original headboard of the bed (leaving only the legs so that the bed could still stand) and placed the bed against the headboard.

That's it, you can admire it.

Now, knowing the wisdom of the process, you will succeed. Go for it!

The first thing we see as soon as we cross the threshold of the bedroom is the bed. And whether it will be comfortable for us to be in the room depends on how stylishly it is decorated. Bed linen, its material and style, presence or absence canopy- all of these are important components of the overall impression of the bedroom. But anyway the main role belongs to a beautiful headboard - it is this that can radically change the appearance of your bed, and the whole room as a whole.

Let's talk about the types of headboards for beds

There are as many styles as there are so many design options for bed headboards.

Wooden headboard is rightfully considered a classic of the “bedroom” genre. Depending on how the wood is processed, the bed can organically fit into almost any style - from a bedroom in the good old Victorian style to modern and shabby chic. Ascetic headboards are usually practically devoid of decor; they have a rectangular or slightly rounded shape, and are covered with varnish or paint. More sophisticated options a la Provence can be decorated with wavy patterns, and their most luxurious counterparts (beds in Baroque, Rococo, Classicism and Empire styles) are real works of art. Beds with high headboardsbusiness card sophisticated chic bedrooms.

Idea: If you have boards or old carved shutters or doors, you can install them as a headboard. In the first case, this will give the room an eco-atmosphere, in the second, it will create a vintage spirit.

Metal headboard – another old-timer in the kingdom of beds. It is actively used by many design trends - from romantic vintage and Romanesque styles to strict Scandinavian.

Mosaic and stone headboards. These can be fancy patterns from sea pebbles or pieces of glass, shards ceramic tiles and so on.

Textile used to decorate the head of the bed quite often. The reason for such popularity lies, most likely, in the atmosphere of comfort that the fabric brings to the room. And the wealth of choice of the right fabric also plays a role: heavy velvet is suitable for decorating a bed in the Baroque or Rococo style, but for empire-style rooms it is better to give preference to shiny golden satin.

Headboard in the form of a mirror – it will suit you only if you are not a follower of Feng Shui, since any more or less savvy expert in the principles of this Taoist practice will tell you that the mirror needs to be placed in a different place.

How to decorate a wall where a headboard should be

If you bought a bed without an unusual headboard, there are two options - either you are content with its absence, but somehow decorate the wall above the bed in an interesting way, or you make the headboard yourself. For craftsmen who are accustomed to holding a jigsaw and a furniture stapler in their hands, it will be a small task - just come up with a suitable decor option and implement it. But for those who are unfamiliar with this technique, we have an easier way - to decorate the wall above the bed.

  • Drawings made through curly designs look very stylish as a substitute for a headboard. stencils. They can be either flat or voluminous, that is, made using putty.
  • You can also decorate the wall with purchased self-adhesive film patterns. This is one of the simplest options for decorating a bed.

Advice: Athletes and sports fans can show their imagination: stick hockey sticks on the wall, create fancy patterns from light tennis balls or pucks.

New, original, creative. This design of the headboard for the bed will definitely arouse the interest of guests

This method is suitable if the upholstery of the bed base is worn out, dirty, or you just want to change it. For example, in our case, for a small bedroom, we wanted the furniture in it to be light. Therefore, it was decided to change the dark fabric upholstery to a new, light pink color.

All work was completed in 1 day. Here the reupholstery took a little longer than it might have, as the original dark upholstery could show through the new light pink fabric, and the base was first reupholstered with an additional layer of white fabric. If your fabric for upholstery is thick enough, you can skip the “lining” step.

You will need:

Fabric for reupholstery;

If necessary, fabric for an additional “lining” layer;

Tools to disassemble and then assemble the bed base;

Tailor's pins;

Fabric scissors;

Sewing machine and thread;

Furniture stapler and staples;

If necessary, use small nails and a hammer.

Step 1

Disassemble the bed, remove the legs and other parts that will interfere with the upholstery. To avoid confusion later during assembly, you can mark the right/left parts and write down on a piece of paper at what distance from the edges of the parts the fastening points are located (holes for screws, etc.).

Step 2

First - the headboard, the “lining” layer. Take a piece of fabric sufficient to wrap the part with a large margin (minimum 20-30 cm, the excess can then be trimmed). Wrap the headboard with fabric, inside out. At the corners, secure the folds with pins. Then remove the fabric, stitch the corners and trim off the excess.

Turn the part for upholstering the headboard onto front side, put it on the headboard. Wrap the edges of the fabric, pull them quite tightly and secure with a stapler. You can start from the middle of each side, gradually moving to the edges. Ideally, two people work: one stretches and holds the fabric, the second secures the fabric with a stapler.

Step 3

Now - the outer layer of fabric. Here the excess fabric is simply neatly folded into folds, and the folds are secured with a stapler. You can do the same as in the step above, sewing up the corners and cutting off the excess.

Step 4

When finished, return the headboard fastening elements to their place.

If you use two layers of fabric, as in our case, you can, after the first layer is ready, find, by checking the notes, places for fastenings, and mark them by screwing in and out the screws. It will be easier to find these holes later.
