As is usually the case with linguists, with an understanding of what antonymic phraseological units are, it's complicated. There are broad and narrow understandings of this term:

  • Broad understanding is that antonym phraseological units have opposite meaning. There are quite a lot of such phraseological units that can be selected.
  • Narrow understanding is that, in addition to the requirement of opposite meanings, two antonymous phraseological units must have the same word composition with the exception of one of the words of each phraseological unit. For example, “rolling up your sleeves” - “carelessly.” Naturally, there are already much fewer such antonymic phraseological units.

To be honest, the narrow understanding seems to me somehow contrived and impoverishing linguistic reality, because the main thing is the opposite of meanings, and formal restrictions prevent one from finding a truly successful version of a phraseological unit-antonym for a given phraseological unit. As a practitioner, it is difficult for me to understand why such scientific-like constructions are put forward, which only create unnecessary complications.

Usually at the end of the material about phraseological units with any word, I write which of these phraseological units I would like to use liked it the most . But now there are so many of them and they are so different that I probably won’t be able to choose my favorite ones.
