Introduction

Dear reader, first of all, congratulations on a wonderful event - the upcoming acquaintance with the new Windows 7 operating system! In no existing operating system, developers have invested as much work as it took Microsoft to bring its new product to market. Numerous rumors concerning Windows 7 have kindled a serious interest in the new product both among professionals and ordinary users: everyone wanted to quickly try out the revolutionary innovations of this operating system in practice. Now you have the opportunity to join the ranks of the curious fully armed - along with this tutorial. This edition not only covers the basics of working with Windows, but also focuses on the new components and features of Windows 7 so that you can better understand them by focusing your attention. When writing the book, it was taken into account that many users did not dare to switch to the Windows Vista operating system and that all its innovations, which remained in the "seven", will be new to them.
By default, Windows 7 retained the User Account Control feature. When attempting to perform any administrative action, the computer screen dims and a window appears. User Account Control, in which you need to confirm your actions by pressing the button Continue. Since you will come across this window quite often, the mention of it is omitted in the material of the book when describing all actions. When the window appears User Account Control while parsing an example from a book on a computer, simply press the button Continue, making sure the action matches the theme of the example and is called by you. We'll talk more about User Account Control in Chapter 8.
The book was written on the basis of full version Windows 7 - "Maximum" (Ultimate). Therefore, I recommend that you install this particular edition on your computer in order to get acquainted with all the innovations in Windows 7 discussed in the tutorial.

Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

In the first chapter, we will talk about preparing for the transition to the new operating system (OS) Windows 7 and directly about the installation process. You'll learn what hardware requirements your computer must meet to support Windows 7, what editions of Windows 7 are available, and you'll be able to choose the one that's right for you. Installing Windows 7 will be considered in two versions: both as a sole and as a second OS while maintaining the previous version of Windows. In the final sections of the chapter, you will learn about the tool for transferring files and settings from an old OS to a new one, which allows you to quickly restore your familiar working environment on an updated computer, as well as how to upgrade the operating system.

Hardware requirements for installing Windows 7

If we compare the previous version of the operating Windows systems Vista with Windows 7, the latter is not so demanding on computer resources. For this reason, the question of whether your computer is suitable for installing Windows 7 can most often be answered in the affirmative. This applies even to those machines that have already “knocked” four or five years. However, you still need to make sure that your computer's hardware can afford the famous Aero interface that Windows 7 inherited from Windows Vista.
If you have Windows Vista installed, then you can say that you are in a more privileged position than users of earlier versions of Windows, because even before installing Windows 7 you can evaluate the resources of your iron friend using a special performance index that takes a value from 1 to 5.9. To find out this index, run the command Start Control Panel System and Maintenance System. In the window that appears, among other information, there will be information about the performance index and recommendations for improving it.

NOTE
In the Windows 7 operating system, you can also define this index. However, the range of values in it is extended and does not match the values of this index in Windows Vusta. But despite this, knowing the index in the Vista operating system still helps you figure out which components of the new operating system should be disabled.
If the index value in Windows Vista is 2.0 or higher, you can safely install Windows 7. Even such a low performance index will allow you to work on the Internet and with text editors without problems. But most games that require significant resources should be forgotten. In addition, during the installation process, the installation wizard will independently decide whether or not to disable the Aero interface.
The situation is different for those who want to install Windows 7 on a computer with Windows XP. This operating system does not contain performance index information. This makes evaluating hardware difficult. However, as a rule, you can safely install the "seven" on a computer that was considered modern five years ago. Probably, in this case, there may be problems with drivers - programs that control the hardware of the computer. For example, if your PC has a built-in video or sound card, then you need to be prepared for the fact that any of this will not work in Windows 7.
For this reason, if you want to try to avoid such, not the most pleasant, "surprises", check if the hardware manufacturer's website has any drivers for the new system.
ADVICE
If there are drivers available for some hardware that are designed for Windows Vista, chances are you will be able to use them on Windows 7 as well.
If you are not so strong in search of various drivers and do not want to "dig" into the hardware of the system unit, you can use special program, which will tell you how painlessly you can switch from one system to another. This utility is called Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. With its help, you can test your computer regardless of the installed operating system and, as a result, get an answer to the main question, is it possible to install Windows 7 on this PC. In addition, the program can give some useful advice.
If you decide to use this adviser, then the algorithm of your actions will be as follows.
1. By special short address tinyurl.com/no4xb7 download the migration advisor, after specifying the language you need.
2. Run the downloaded program.
ATTENTION
In addition to the advisor file, you may need to download a special Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or higher.
3. After installation, double-click the icon that appears on the desktop, and in the window that opens, click the button Start checking. The program will start testing the computer (Fig. 1.1).
4. In the received report, in the section System, you can follow the link View all system requirements. Here you can see information about which programs have compatibility issues with the new operating system or will not be supported, as well as the drivers of which components should be updated (Fig. 1.2).

Rice. 1.1. Upgrade Advisor running on Windows XP

Rice. 1.2. Transition Advisor Report

5. To return to the report, in the section Devices follow the link View all devices. A list of all available hardware will be presented here. From this list, you can find out if all suitable drivers are present. After you find out the necessary information, you can close the transition advisor.

Overview of Windows 7 editions

Taking into account the interests of various user groups, Microsoft has released several versions of Windows 7 on the market. They differ from each other in a set of features and, accordingly, in cost. This section provides Comparative characteristics editions of Windows 7 so you can choose the one that suits your needs.
There are five versions of Windows 7: Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. In this list, releases are arranged in order of increasing functionality (and cost). Simpler versions of Windows 7 are obtained by cutting back on the most comprehensive edition available to the general public, Windows 7 Ultimate.
"Windows 7 Starter". This version is the most simplified version of Windows 7. Its main purpose is to be used as a pre-installed operating system in netbooks. In this version you can't change the background desktop, no Aero interface, automatic backup to other computers is not supported local network, No Windows programs Media Center, Notes, Scissors. It is clear that this was done so that the prices for netbooks with Windows 7 were not too high.
"Windows 7 Home Basic". This basic Windows version 7 is aimed at home users whose computers are not particularly powerful. Like Windows 7 Starter, it lacks Aero styling and some multimedia features.
Windows 7 Home Premium. This version is also intended for home users, but it has support for the Aero interface. But there is still no system for automatically creating backups to other computers on the local network. You will also not be able to control the PC remotely.
"Windows 7 Professional". This version includes all the features of Windows 7 Home Premium plus the ability to connect a computer managed by the named version to a corporate LAN with domain name support, as well as the ability to remotely manage desktop and support for BitLocker data encryption technology.
Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise. These versions are the same product, but with different names. The only difference is that "Windows 7 Ultimate" is intended for a wide audience of users, and "Windows 7 Corporate" is available only under a special corporate license. These products combine all the features mentioned above plus additional features. For example, new technology data protection (data encryption BitLocker To Go), all language packs, BranchCache technology to increase the speed of access to a large corporate network, virtual disk support.

Installation process

If you have ever had to install one of the previous versions of Windows on your computer, then when you install Windows 7, you will be pleasantly surprised that the whole process is carried out in graphical mode and takes relatively little time. In addition, all editions of Windows 7 are now located on one disc and you can simply select the desired edition in the list.
Most often, users resort to one of two options for installing Windows 7: as the only operating system on the computer, or as a second, while maintaining the previous version of Windows. We'll take a look at both of these options so you can choose the one that's right for you.

Installing Windows 7 as the only operating system

If HDD If your computer is empty or has a previous version of Windows that you want to completely remove in favor of Windows 7, follow these instructions when installing Windows 7.
Insert the installation Windows disk 7 to your computer's DVD drive.
First of all, in the BIOS settings, you must specify the CD-ROM as the first boot device, since the system will be installed from DVD. Since you are a novice user and have probably never encountered a BIOS, we will walk through the entire process of changing the computer boot order using the Phoenix-Award BIOS as an example. If your PC has a different BIOS version, the appearance of the menu and the name of its items may differ slightly, but in principle the procedure will remain the same.

DEFINITION
BIOS (from the English Basic Input-Output System - basic input-output system) is a program written on a permanent memory chip that is mounted in motherboard. The BIOS is executed when the computer is turned on, its task is to test the performance of all devices and prepare the PC to boot the operating system.
To enter the BIOS menu, immediately after turning on the computer, repeatedly press the key Delete. As a result, the menu shown in Fig. 1.3. Use the cursor keys to move to the item Advanced BIOS Features(Advanced BIOS settings) and click Enter. In the submenu that opens (Fig. 1.4), we are interested in the item Boot Seq & Floppy Setup(Drive Boot and Installation Sequence) listed first. Make sure it's highlighted in red and click Enter.

Rice. 1.3. BIOS setup menu (screenshot)

Rice. 1.4. Advanced BIOS Features submenu (screenshot)

The next step is to change the device you want to boot from. The first item on the list is First boot device(First boot device), it should be highlighted. Click enter, to open the device selection menu shown in the center of fig. 1.5. Use the cursor keys to move to an option CDROM and press Enter to save changes.

Rice. 1.5. Choosing a priority device to boot your computer (screenshot)

To leave the BIOS setup menu and save the new settings, press the key F10 and confirm the exit by pressing Enter. After that, the computer will restart and a message may appear on the screen (Press any key to boot from CD or DVD). Follow this recommendation to start booting from disk.
After the files necessary to start the Windows 7 setup program have been copied, you will see its first window (Fig. 1.6), in which you will need to select the language to be installed, the time format, and the keyboard layout. If all lists contain the option Russian, do not change these settings and just click Further. The next step is to select the action you want to take using the installer. This can be both the installation itself and the restoration of the system in which the failure occurred. Since we are now interested in the first option, click on the button Install.

Rice. 1.6. Installation language selection window

The license agreement will open on the next page. To accept it and continue the installation process, check the box I accept the license terms and press Further.
Then you are prompted to select the type of installation of the system: upgrade the previous version to Windows 7 or run complete installation. In our case, you need to select the full installation.
At the next stage, a window will open for selecting a hard disk partition on which Windows 7 will be installed, with information about the full size and free space of the hard disk partitions. Highlight the appropriate volume by clicking on it. If the hard disk is not partitioned, the list will contain only one item.
If the installer detects a previous version of Windows on the selected partition, you will be notified. Confirming your intention to install new version Windows, automatically agree that, after installation, the files of the old operating system will be saved to the folder Windows.old. You will be able to open them, but you will not be able to start the previous OS.
Next, the installation of Windows 7 will begin directly. It proceeds automatically and does not require your participation. During the installation process, the computer will restart several times. Since the BIOS settings are still set to boot from CD-ROM, do not press any keys after the message appears Press any key to boot from CD or DVD(Press any key to boot from CD or DVD) to start booting from the hard drive.
When the installation of Windows 7 is successfully completed, the system will start, however, before getting to Desktop, you have to create an account, set the date, time and time zone, and choose a computer name and background desktop.
In the first dialog boxes, you will need to enter a name and, if there is a need to protect the computer from unauthorized persons, the password of your account(Fig. 1.7). For more information on what an account is, see the beginning of Chapter 8.

Rice. 1.7. Entering a username

Next, a window for entering the product key for activation will appear (Fig. 1.8), since each edition of Windows 7 has its own activation key. However, you can install the system without entering a serial number by unchecking Automatically activate Windows when connected to the Internet.
Next, you can select special options for downloading updates, time zone and time, as well as the current location of the computer: a set of network parameters that are set based on what type of network your PC will be connected to (Fig. 1.9).

Rice. 1.8. Window for entering a key for activating Windows

Rice. 1.9. Completing the setup

We can say that Windows 7 is installed. However, I advise you to finish installing the new operating system by checking the drivers. So, in the best case, all hardware should be determined, and all drivers installed. To see if everything is in order, you should contact Device manager. To do this, run the command Start Control Panel System and Security System Device Manager or in the menu search field Start enter the phrase device manager. A window will open (Fig. 1.10).

Rice. 1.10. device Manager

If in Device Manager any part is open and marked with a small yellow exclamation mark, it is strongly recommended to install drivers for these computer components. To do this, you can do the following.
Update automatically. Right-click on an undefined or unsupported device and select command Update hardware configuration. Although this method often does not help, you can still try it.
Refresh by searching the web. This method is better than the previous one. Right click on an undefined device and select command Update drivers. Then, in the window for specifying the update method, specify Automatic search for updated drivers.

Installing Windows 7 as a second operating system

Perhaps, in order to gradually get used to the features of the new operating system, or for some other reason, you want to install Windows 7, keeping the previous version of Windows. You can do this if the following requirements are met: the hard disk must be divided into at least two partitions (one of them will contain the previous version of Windows), Windows 7 will be installed on a free partition of at least 20 GB.

NOTE
If the hard drive is divided into two partitions, one of which meets the requirements of Windows 7, and the second is almost completely full, the installation program may require at least 500 MB of free space on the first partition to deploy the installation image (later this amount will be freed up).
If you are on an older version of Windows, insert the Windows 7 installation disc into your DVD drive and wait for the window shown in Figure 1 to appear. 1.11. Click on the link Install and go through the steps in previous section. The only difference will arise during the selection of the installation location.

Rice. 1.11. Installer window in Windows XP

When the installation of Windows 7 is completed and the computer restarts, you will see on the screen Windows Boot Manager in which, using the cursor keys, you need to move to the desired operating system and press Enter to start downloading it. If you do not take any action at this stage, after 30 seconds Windows 7 will start loading as the default operating system.

File and Settings Transfer Tool

Windows 7 Setup includes a dedicated file and settings transfer tool that you can use to move your personal files, some program settings, and desktop both when switching to another computer, and when installing a new operating system on your PC. You can use the migration tool to move the following components to a new computer (or to a new operating system).

There are several ways to transfer files and settings.
A special USB cable for transferring data using the tool in question, which must be purchased separately. It should be noted that a regular USB cable will not work in this case.
Connecting computers over a local network.

Windows 7 Tutorial

Never before has Windows - the most popular operating system from Microsoft - received as many flattering reviews as its seventh version. The product is really good quality. Almost all user expectations were met: the new operating system (OS) has a pleasant and intuitive interface, it is undemanding to computer resources and has a relatively low price. This tutorial, written by Sergey Vavilov, is dedicated to this particular OS - Windows 7. The description of the operating system is presented in the publication in the most logical sequence, taking into account different levels reader preparation: from uncertain to sophisticated user. In addition, the book details some of the features that are not new to Windows, but which were not in the most popular version of this operating system - Windows XP. Since the previous version of Windows, Vista, failed and was not widely adopted, for many users, for example, the Aero interface and its tricks may be new.

The first chapters of the book will teach you how to properly install an operating system. In this case, from the four methods described, you can choose exactly the one that you need. After installation, the book covers the basic and advanced features of Explorer, as well as the possibility of "revitalizing" the software shell using personalization tools. Along with the operating system, standard programs are installed on the computer. Their goal is to make life easier for the average user. Among the standard there are both small but useful utilities (text editor and Calculator) and complex applications (Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer browser) with updated interface and functions. A significant part of the book is devoted to the capabilities of the operating system for working on the Internet. And this is no accident: today, traveling around the global network is often the main goal of using a computer. How well you learn these features will determine the effectiveness of their use, as well as the safety of your work. A significant part of the tutorial is devoted to the topic of security, which, no doubt, will make your knowledge complete.

The publication also discusses other products from Microsoft, released under the brand name Windows Live. They include many useful things, such as mail client, photo album and new ways to control your children when they work at the computer. I think you have already convinced yourself that the Windows 7 Tutorial should be your reference book. So turn the page and start reading.

I present to your attention the best, in my opinion, on this moment tutorial for working on a computer in Windows 7. I don't even know how to describe it. It has everything - from the little things, the basics of working at a computer, to a description of the system settings. You will learn how to install Windows 7, customize the system for yourself, use all kinds of built-in tools in Windows 7.

In short, the whole system is described in full, in detail and intelligibly. In addition, popular programs are described: Word and Excel in detail. And all this with illustrations and examples. I highly recommend to get acquainted. It would probably take me half a year to create such a guide about Windows 7. Huge respect and respect to the author of this creation - Sergey Vavilov!

To open this tutorial you will need PDF reader. I recommend using Foxit Reader.
