Hiking in autumn with tents. What to take with you on an autumn hike? List of equipment for hiking in the off-season

Summer is over, but is this a reason to close the season of outdoor recreation? The most amazing landscapes can be seen at this time of year. Dress warmly and take advantage of the last sunny days: go on an overnight hike or picnic with the whole family. And these tips will help you spend an autumn night in a tent without any unpleasant moments.

A good place for a hike in the forest

The air temperature drops noticeably in autumn, and there are frequent showers and gusty winds. If you're camping with children, it's a good idea to choose a designated campsite for your campsite. Perhaps even in a tourist lodge in the nearest nature reserve or national park. We visited nature without sacrificing comfort.

Keep an eye on the weather forecast the day before your hike

When planning a family outing in the woods several weeks in advance, you, of course, checked the long-term weather forecast. But remember that weather is unpredictable, so keep an eye on weather sites.

Take a warm sleeping bag with you

Those sleeping bags in which you feel quite comfortable in the summer are unlikely to keep you warm in September-October. Rent warm sleeping bags for the autumn-winter period.

Check all equipment before going on a hike

Make sure that the tent comes with all the pegs for installation, the zipper in the sleeping bag does not come apart, the camping chairs are intact, etc.

Get a quality tent

The easiest way would be to rent it directly at the campsite. It is advisable that the tent be a camping tent, not a trekking one. Pay attention to the seasonality of the tent.

Don't forget about travel mats

A karemat, a rubber camping mat, is a must, no matter how good your sleeping bag is. It won't let you freeze.

Bring warm clothes

It is clear that you are unlikely to go into the autumn forest without a sweater and warm jeans or pants. However, this is not enough to keep you from freezing at night.

Take with you:
-Thermal underwear
-Fleece jacket
-Sweater
-Waterproof jacket
-Warm hat
-Gloves or mitts (plus one spare pair if the first one gets wet)
-Puff jackets (even if the weather forecast is favorable)
-Boots with water-repellent coating
-Spare boots
-Many (!) pairs of socks
-Raincoat
-Several changes of clothes (depending on the duration of the hike).

Bring extra firewood and coal

This is something you should never skimp on! It is better to take a smaller amount of food, but be sure to keep the camp warm at all times.

Set up camp in a protected area

You should not set up tents on open space. It is advisable that the camp be protected from the wind by a forest. Also choose a place where it will be warmed by the sun.

Install awnings

The awning can be installed over the picnic area and attached to the trees behind the tent for additional protection from the wind.

Wake up slowly

Don't rush to jump out of the tent straight into the street. As soon as you wake up, spend a few minutes warming up in your sleeping bag.

Warm your clothes in your sleeping bag

Morning in autumn forest frosty, so you should dress especially warmly after sleep. To keep your clothes warm, use a little trick: put them in your sleeping bag for a few minutes.

Take a double sleeping set

On cold autumn nights, it’s a good idea to play it safe: put two rugs under your sleeping bag and even cover yourself with an additional sleeping bag or a special protective cover (bivvy bag).

Use a heating pad

Hot water bottle or plastic bottle With hot water in the legs is a real salvation on cold autumn nights in the forest.

Eat before bed

In cold temperatures the body spends a large number of energy to stay warm. To replenish your energy reserves, you should reinforce your strength: eat something filling before bed.

Relieve yourself before bed

The rule “use the toilet even if you don’t feel like it” works not only when traveling and long excursions around the city, but also when hiking. To avoid getting out of your warm sleeping bag in the middle of the night, be sure to visit the camp toilet before bed.

Do some exercise

This is true not only in the morning, but also in the evening. Jump, warm up and only then climb into your sleeping bag.

Don't breathe into your sleeping bag

The easiest way to warm up in a cold bed, well known to everyone since childhood, is to “breathe” under the blanket. However, you shouldn’t do this outdoors, and even in the cold season: condensation will form in the sleeping bag.

Set up camp before dark

When going camping in the fall, keep in mind that it gets dark early at this time of year, and you should set up camp before sunset.

By following these simple rules, you will spend an autumn night in the forest comfortably and safely.

    • Backpack: (volume 55-120l):

If you don't have such a backpack, rent one. Other backpacks are absolutely not suitable!!! (Except if you have a really compact and light series of equipment). Remember that a bag of provisions must still fit there (a bag of about 3 kg, the average size they give in supermarkets). Walking through the mountains with things attached to a backpack, as if it were Christmas tree, not at all comfortable.

    • Shoes:

Worn-out trekking waterproof boots, or boots that are well impregnated with a special water-repellent impregnation (Budget version of Bertsa). And instead, light sports sneakers (the lighter and smaller the better, you should carry them). Most the best option, and the most expensive))) are hiking sneakers with a membrane, synthetic or made of nubuck.) Since the grass can be quite wet, it is necessary that the shoes either do not get wet or dry quickly.

    • Water-repellent impregnation for shoes (optional!):

It’s good to have a small bottle of impregnation from a good manufacturer like Nikwax, Toko. Others are possible, it doesn’t matter, the main thing is that it works! :)

    • Trousers:

You can take trekking pants, self-skid pants or military tactical pants ( Main principle to dry quickly). + pants for change. so or a budget option sweatpants, and instead of thermal underwear: leggings.

    • T-shirt

The best option is a thermal T-shirt made of special fabric. But a regular synthetic T-shirt will do, 2 pcs.

    • A warm sweater:

The ideal option is fleece, a sweatshirt made of Polartec fabric, 1-2 pcs.

    • Jacket:

The best option is a special hiking trekking jacket, or a jacket from a ski suit; as a budget option, you can also use a sports jacket. The jacket must have a hood!!! for protection from rain, wind and sometimes snow.

    • Headgear and gloves:

A sports hat and a pair of gloves + (it is advisable to have some work gloves, which you don’t mind). It is also good to have a Balaclava with you in case of strong winds...snow and frost (and this happens on the tops of mountains).

    • Linen:

It is best to use thermal underwear for trekking, or synthetics, one bet is enough, if you have one Thermal Set, then minus one T-shirt. Underwear must also be thermal or synthetic! (The main goal is to remove moisture from the body and dry quickly.)

    • Socks:

The best thing is special hiking or thermal socks; they have high thermoregulating properties and reduce the likelihood of calluses forming. There are winter and summer versions of such socks, a budget option: wool socks - 1 pair, 2 pairs of cotton socks.

    • Shoe covers for feet:

Shoe covers (flashlights) are optional, but it’s better to have! (The main goal in spring and autumn is clean pants, but sometimes you need to wander around in the snow).

    • Raincoat:

You should have a reliable lightweight raincoat made of waterproof fabric with you in case of heavy rain or snowfall, but if you have a special waterproof hiking jacket, then a raincoat is not necessary.

    • Sunglasses:

Glasses with good sun protection factor.

    • A flashlight is required:

The best one is a headlamp with LEDs, it is very convenient and economical, and don’t forget spare batteries.

    • Backpack cover:

It is better to have a separate waterproof cape for your backpack, it is convenient.

    • Documents, money and things:

Documents, money and belongings should be stored in a sealed waterproof bag. Strong bags will also work.

    • Mug, deep bowl, spoon, knife:

The dishes should be light. There is no need for a fork or disposable tableware when camping! It’s better when the cookware is made of titanium, light steel or aluminum; it’s light, won’t crack, and you can heat food in it over the fire.

    • Towel, personal hygiene items, cream, toilet paper, large garbage bags, matches (lighter):

Personal hygiene items only without fanaticism, a small towel, there are special quick-drying microfiber towels, a toothbrush, toothpaste (small tube), soap (small). You can put things in garbage bags so they don’t get wet; if necessary, a cream (small, without fanaticism))) will help with chapped skin.

Autumn outside the window is not a reason to sit at home, wrapped in a blanket. Autumn hikes give bright colors nature, fresh invigorating air and a sea of new impressions! However, many are put off by the unstable autumn weather. How to properly prepare for a hike in the fall to get only positive emotions?

So, the contents of your backpack will depend on the length of your hike. Hikes can be divided into three categories:

One-day stays - no overnight stay. This is the easiest type of hiking, but you should prepare for it wisely.
Weekend hikes (WHT) - usually with one or two overnight stays. Typically, a tourist on such trips experiences moderate loads. This is primarily due to the greater weight and volume of the backpack and the things located there (compared to one-day hikes).
Multi-day - long hikes with long routes. Sometimes it is impossible to interrupt such a trip suddenly due to weather conditions or for some other reasons, so you need to prepare for it with complete seriousness and forethought.

    Clothes for an autumn hike

Autumn is an unreliable season; it loves rain, cold winds and night frosts. When choosing clothes for a hike, remember: you can always take off what you don’t need, but it’s impossible to put on what you left at home. And in general, dress as if you are sure that it will be a little colder than the weather forecast said (within reasonable limits, of course!).

The main clothing of a tourist is the one in which he goes on his route. In the fall it's pants and a jacket. Its task is to protect tourists from cold, overheating, wind and other external factors. Clothing “on the go” should be comfortable, not restrict movement and reliable. Avoid cotton and wool. These fabrics absorb moisture, thereby preventing normal thermoregulation. Modern synthetics dry many times faster.

A properly chosen jacket will prevent a tourist from getting cold or wet. The upper body is at risk from both hypothermia and overheating, so I advise you to pay attention to membrane jackets. The membrane is a special fabric that perfectly removes moisture, is almost not blown through, but does not prevent the evaporation of moisture from the human body. So, the tourist will feel dry even in the wettest weather. There are membrane jackets and trousers for both the warm season and insulated ones for the cold season. A good membrane can replace a regular raincoat for a tourist.

Sweatshirts, trousers, hats, gloves, and scarves made of Polartec fleece will help tourists keep warm. This fleece comes in different thicknesses, from very thin to very thick. The thicker this fabric, the higher its heat-saving properties. Polartec has advantages over regular fleece. The first fibers have a special structure that allows evaporated moisture from the body to pass through without absorbing moisture.

In the cool season, I advise you to wear thermal underwear under your jacket and trousers. There is a misconception that thermal underwear should keep a person warm. But that's not true. Thermal underwear keeps the tourist's body dry, ensuring normal thermoregulation of the body. Thermal underwear must be the right size and fit the body, otherwise it will not be able to wick moisture away from the skin. The combination of thermal underwear + fleece + membrane in cold weather is generally a win-win option - it is dry and warm.

Take a headdress: a hat or an ear band. In the autumn-spring periods, the human body experiences “restructuring”; at this time it is easy to catch a cold.

Gloves. Indispensable for multi-day hikes, they are also useful for one-day hikes, especially if you have to climb a mountain: the stones cool down quickly in the fall, and it is very cold to touch the icy rocks and stones.

Socks. Even if the hike is one-day, just in case, put replacement dry socks and a couple of plastic bags in your backpack: if you accidentally get your feet wet, put on dry socks, then the bags and back into your shoes. You will be dry and warm for two or three hours, but in wet socks and shoes you will quickly freeze and may catch a cold.

Well, if you’re going on a hike with one or more overnight stays, you can’t do without changing your socks. When you arrive at the parking lot after setting up camp, the first thing to do is put on dry socks and a change of shoes. Feet must be protected and kept warm. At night you can wear two pairs of socks, one made of cotton, the other wool.

If you don’t have a good membrane jacket, don’t forget to put a raincoat in your backpack - the forecast is a forecast, and autumn is tricky and unpredictable.

A set of clothes for an overnight stay is a tourist’s “must have.” It is simply impossible to stay warm in wet clothes after a day's trek! So, any dry clothes will do: thermal underwear, a dry long-sleeve T-shirt (preferably) and dry breeches, sports pants, either cotton or wool. The main thing is that you feel comfortable in them, and that they do not interfere with your sleep by restricting your movements.

    Shoes for hiking in autumn

In autumn, the forest is humid, so it is better to choose waterproof shoes. You don't have to wear rubber boots if there's no rain in the forecast, but if you do decide to wear them, wear wool socks or put felt insoles inside, otherwise your feet may get cold. If you don’t have waterproof shoes in your wardrobe, then you can treat your regular shoes with a special “Stroke” type spray to impart waterproof properties. Such processing for day trip It’s quite enough, and the spray is inexpensive and will last for many times.

If the hike is for 2 or more days, then you need two pairs of shoes: one for walking, waterproof and reliable, the second can be any sneakers (you will wear them in the camp when the main shoes are dried by the fire). When drying your shoes by the fire, be careful not to burn them. Membrane shoes cannot be placed close to fire - they will deteriorate, dry out and then burst. Do not leave dried shoes under the tent awning, they will become damp. Take a bag, pack your shoes in it and bring it into the tent. It will be nice to put on dry shoes in the morning.

Never wear brand new shoes when hiking. Due to some physiological characteristics, it may not suit you, and the whole journey will become torture for you, not relaxation.

Autumn hike– this is an amazing opportunity to enjoy all the delights of the surrounding spaces. Nature at this time of year is especially beautiful: the forest shimmers with different colors, the smell of rotten leaves is in the air, and there is simply darkness of mushrooms, berries and fruits. So who said it's summer? best time for walking.

Of course, the success of any hike depends on the right time, and therefore there are some subtleties in autumn hikes. They mainly depend on what month you choose for trekking. Of course, if you go on a trip to another country, then scorching sun, warm sand and azure sea await you there. But if we are talking about Crimea or the Carpathians, then it is important to take into account the weather specifics in the mountains.

    • . Autumn comes to the mountains at the beginning of this month and after 3-4 weeks the entire foothills and mountain slopes are covered with golden colors. Sometimes September is still a continuation of summer, and therefore the weather can be especially good: daytime temperatures are around 20 degrees, and frosts are possible at night. In order not to freeze, you need to take with you a good and warm sleeping bag that will allow you to warm up and not turn into an icicle. It is also worth dressing warmly, because the weather in the mountains can change very sharply and the bright sun will be replaced by strong wind and rain. At this time, nature is already beginning to fill with yellow and red colors, the first leaves are falling from the trees, and the birds are gathering in flocks and preparing for a long flight to another country.
    • . This month is known to tourists as “Indian summer”. What are its charms? The bright sun gives us the opportunity to enjoy warm days before a long and cold winter. The daytime air temperature in the mountains does not drop below 5 degrees, and at night the first cold and frost are already possible. You will say that at such times there is often fog and visibility can be quite poor. Yes it is! But there is some mysticism and mystery in the fogs, and, accordingly, there is a special interest among travelers. Do not forget that at this time there is a high probability of intermittent rain, frost or even light snow. But this makes the mountain spaces and landscapes even more attractive and alluring. But the right equipment and well-chosen clothes and shoes will help you stay warm on your hike and get a lot of positive emotions.
    • . This month, winter already fully dominates and rules. That is why the mountain slopes are surrounded by thick fog, snow flies, and severe frosts are possible. If you are going on a hike at this time, it is better to postpone it to a more favorable season.

Let's look at what options for hiking in the fall are possible with our company's guides.

    Hiking in early autumn

You can consider options for hiking in the high mountain zone - in September, hiking in the Arkhyz area is possible - going to high mountain passes, climbing peaks (Achishkho) and various trekking options. At this time, the nature of the Krasnodar Territory and mountainous Adygea is practically no different from summer, although the higher you climb into the mountains, the colder it will be at night. As autumn comes into its own, the first frosts appear in the high mountain zone, and in the morning the ice creaks on the tent awning. Golden leaves appear at the foot of the mountains...

October. You should forget about the highlands. Hiking to altitudes above 2000 (two thousand) meters above sea level becomes dangerous. The first snow falls in the mountains and avalanches occur. You should consider options for the middle mountains - mountainous Adygea and. Amazing nature This area captivates with its beauty, quiet tranquility and peace of mind. These tours are very interesting for artists and poets - the golden outfit, panoramic views and, of course, the picturesque splendor of the landscapes.

The equipment you choose for a hike in the fall is exactly the same as in the summer. You should take care of warm thermal underwear, a sleeping bag designed for low temperatures and protection from rain - the weather in autumn is not entirely stable.

    Hiking late autumn

As the weather gets colder, you shouldn’t shelve your dreams of hiking in the mountains in the fall. You need to approach your equipment a little more responsibly. It is worth buying warm thermal underwear, a sleeping bag designed for low temperatures and warm socks. Perhaps take thermal dishes and a few hand and foot warmers.

What is late autumn in the Caucasus?

Somewhere from the end of October to the beginning of November, the weather in the Caucasus Mountains begins to deteriorate. The first frost has already passed. The grass has withered. There is a stable snow cover on the peaks - therefore, going to the high mountain zone is associated with an avalanche danger. The NUNATAK Adventure Agency does not conduct hikes in the highlands in November, but you can walk with our guides in the mid-mountains: the territory of mountainous Adygea, the foothill areas of the Krasnodar Territory with access are excellent for hiking in the fall. The further south the hiking area is, the warmer your walks will be. Remember! That the area from Anapa to the border with the Republic of Georgia (Abkhazia) is considered by geographers to be a transition zone of the subtropics, that is, November is the first autumn month in the geographical calendar of this area. That is, trips to the forest in the fall will be painted in the crimson, brown and leaf colors of autumn. Well, if you are not afraid of frosts, the possibility of snowfall, and have a great desire to climb higher, then you should pay attention to the area and territory natural park Bolshoy Thach, where the altitudes are already off the charts at 2000 (two thousand) meters above sea level, but the hiking conditions are more severe, close to winter.

Hiking in the mountains in autumn (late autumn) will be of interest to both beginners in tourism and experienced tourists, since the routes of autumn hikes are not difficult and do not pass far from populated areas.
