Consider how to identify and neutralize a threat on a PC, using the standard Windows Defender antivirus, which is built into the Windows system, as an example:

  1. Open the Windows tray - down arrow icon in the lower right corner of the display. Click on the small white shield.
  2. On the screen, you will immediately see a window with the "Security Center". Click immediately on the first tile "Protection from viruses and threats."
In the "Security Center" window, click on the first tile "Virus and Threat Protection"
  3. Click on "Run Check Now". Defender will immediately launch a quick scan. If the program does not reveal anything, follow the link at the bottom of the "Run a new advanced scan" button.
To get started, you can run a quick scan and, if the defender does not find anything, enable advanced scanning
  4. Select the first or third item. Please note that a full check will take a long time, but you can work in parallel on a PC. To perform the third option - standalone - you will need to restart the PC. Within 15 minutes, the defender will search for and remove threats. Click after selecting "Scan Now".
Select the scan type depending on whether you want to wait a long time for the scan to finish
  5. Wait for the end of the check. In the results, you will see a list of actions that can be performed with the detected threat. Select removal for all found viruses, if any.
Wait for the extended scan to complete and remove viruses if the defender finds them

  1. Expand the "Search" panel through the "Taskbar" (magnifying glass icon). Type cmd in the empty field.
Write simple cmd code in panel search bar
  2. Right-click on the classic Command Prompt application - in the small menu, click on the option to launch the console with administrator rights.
Click on the "Run as administrator" option
  3. Allow the module to make changes in the "OS" by clicking on "Yes".
  4. Now type or paste the command DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. After that, immediately press Enter to execute it. The console will start the process of searching for and repairing corrupted system files. Wait for it to finish - the module will provide you with a report on the work done. Then restart your PC and try to update.
    Paste the copied command DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth using the Ctrl + V combination

The user is able to fix the situation with an unfinished update in many ways: from manually starting the search for updates and clearing the update cache to fixing corrupted system files in the "Command Line" and rolling back the system using a restore point.

Read how to fix windows update error. What to do if an update has downloaded to your computer but is not installed automatically. Although many users do not consider it necessary to update the operating system of their computer, disabling the ability to download and install them, nevertheless, Windows Update keeps the computer up to date protection and its performance.

In the latest versions of Windows, Microsoft has done everything to ensure that updating the operating system depends on the user as little as possible and does not affect the operation of the operating system. But still, with a huge variety of hardware and software, there is always a chance for errors in the operation of the system, and Windows Update is no exception.

When Windows has downloaded the updates, you need to restart your computer to install them. Therefore, when shutting down or restarting the computer, the shutdown menu prompts the user to either "Update and Reload" computer.

Let's look at the situation when updates are not installed (or are not installed completely) and items do not leave the computer shutdown menu "Refresh and Shut Down" or "Update and Reload".

Verify that the update is really not happening

In case of problems with Windows updates, download the program from the official Microsoft website and run it.

Click on Windows Update and click Further. Causes can be discovered when troubleshooting with administrator rights, so in the next window, select and in the window that appears, click again Further.

The tool will detect and fix problems with Windows Update. After that, go to Windows Update, click the button "Check for Updates", download and install them. Updates will be installed after you restart your computer.

Start Windows in Safe Mode

Safe Mode is a way to troubleshoot Windows that starts the system in a limited state: only essential files and drivers. Safe Mode is used to solve problems with programs or drivers that do not work correctly or prevent the system from starting correctly.

To start it, press and hold the Shift button, then select Restart from the Start menu. In the window that appears after restarting the computer, select Troubleshooting / / Download Options / Reload, after which the computer will boot into Safe Mode. Start the computer update process and after it is completed, restart the computer again.

Delete Windows Update Cache Files

Method I

If the Troubleshooter Windows Update found no problems, then the user can do the same manually: stop Windows Update, delete the temporary files it created, and run it again Windows Update. It will take more time, but the process is not complicated at all.

To do this, start the system in safe mode (as indicated above) and enable command line(right click on the start menu and select Command Prompt (Admin)).

At the Command Prompt, enter the following commands:

net stop wuauserver
net stop bits

Method II

Go to the C:\ Windows\ SoftwareDistribution folder and delete its contents. Don't worry, these are just temporary files created by Windows Update and will be created again if needed.

After that, go to the Command Prompt window and run the commands described above:

net stop wuauserver
net stop bits

The methods described above will surely solve the problem with operating system updates. Of course, the simplest and in an efficient way have use Troubleshooter Windows Update. But the other methods described will be no less effective, although some of them are more suitable for advanced PC users.

In November 2015, a new build of OS build 10586 was released. This update was the first major update latest version"windows". Update in the "top ten", as you know, occurs by default through the "Update Center". Despite this, after the release of build 1511 (another name for build 10586), many users began to complain that they did not receive any updates in automatic mode and most likely will not receive them if they sit back. There are reasons for this slight systemic incident, which we will discuss today.

Please note that Microsoft no longer provides the ability to download the update as an image from the official website of the developers. Therefore, such a tool as the Media Creation Tool is not your assistant in this case, since manual update installation is not available and this process can only be completed using the Update Center.

31 days have not passed since the activation of Windows 10

One of the commonplace reasons for the lack of updates is the short time since. A short period means 31 days, and representatives of an American corporation even reported this. These measures were introduced to prevent the possibility of rolling back the system to the "seven" or "eight" (the version that you had on your PC before). As soon as a calendar month passes and an update occurs, the probability of a rollback is reduced to zero.

What to do if you don’t want to wait for the expiration of a month after installing Windows?

If you do not intend to wait, then you can clear the system of files with previous Windows installations - thus, a quick rollback definitely does not shine. This can be done with the Disk Cleanup tool. We briefly describe the essence of the method.

Your main task is, which often appears after a clean installation or updates and at the same time takes up a lot of memory.

In order to get rid of unnecessary cargo, type the key combination Windows + R and in the "Run" window, type cleanmgr, then click OK / Enter. Then the window for launching the OS Disk Cleanup utility will appear.

Once the tool opens, click on the "Clean up system files" button (located at the bottom of the dialog box). Please note that in order to perform this operation, you must have administrator rights on the PC. How to get them, we have repeatedly recalled in previous articles. Once the search for files is completed, check the option "Previous Windows installation” and press OK. As a result of this action, the Windows.old folder will disappear from your device, or at least the contents will be cleared.

Enabled getting updates from multiple locations

Another reason for the "non-updatable" system is that the option to receive updates from several places in active mode simply will not allow your device to accept build 10586 or anything else that will be released later. To disable the feature, go to the "Settings" section, select the "Advanced Options" subsection, and then click on the "Windows Update" link. Here you can deactivate the mentioned option using the item "Choose how and when to receive updates". Finally, search for the latest OS updates available for download.

Installing an update manually

Despite the fact that manual installation in the case of this update is no longer suitable, we will still briefly tell you, dear readers, what needs to be done. Perhaps the ISO file will be returned to the site in the future. In any case, it may also come in handy for future updates.

In case of manual installation, you can download the Media Creation Tool from the corporation's official resource. In the utility, select the option "Update now" (this operation will not affect your files and applications), but at the same time build 10586 will be installed.

Another option is associated with an ISO image that needs to be downloaded from the OS developers website (if such a file is available on the resource). In addition, you can still create a bootable flash drive using the same Media Creation Tool. If you managed to find the image, then mount it on the system or unzip it to a folder on your PC. Subsequently, run the setup file (setup.exe) either from the converted image or from the boot drive. Before starting, do not forget to click "Yes" in the "Keep personal files and applications" notification. After a while, your system will receive update 1511, and all previous data will be saved. If there is no data on the device that would be of any importance to you, you can perform a clean installation using the latest Microsoft images.

Error 80240020 when trying to update

Problems with updating to the "tens" also occur among owners of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Very often, when trying to “upgrade” the system, error 80240020 appears, despite the fact that all the necessary files have already been downloaded and it remains only to wait for the upgrade to complete, but the process does not start.

In some cases, the upgrade wizard may display the message "Something happened". It is curious how in such cases the user can find out what the error is and what actually happened? Just a message of genius in its content from the creators of the OS. But let's not talk about it and get down to business.

The reason for the message with the code 80240020 may be corrupted installer files. Therefore, you need to clear the update file cache and download the package again. The following directories need to be released: %WinDir%SoftwareDistributionDownload and %SystemDrive%$Windows.~BT. Then reboot and run the command prompt as an administrator, where you need to type the following algorithm:

After a few minutes, check if the update package is downloading. As soon as the files are downloaded, the system will prompt you to reboot the device and then the installation process will begin.

Well, there are more than enough reasons for refusing to update. At the same time, all the reasons are justified and in most cases have explanations from the developers themselves, so there is no reason to doubt the above recommendations.
